Just Us

granny when

“Granny when are you going home?”

“Granny when are you going home?”

Ray and I had just returned from a conference. I was gone longer than usual. My mom was gracious enough to take care of Camden while we were gone. Excursions to Toys R Us and Little Caesars were the order of most of his days. My counters are overflowing with Oreos and candy corn that would delight any child. And while all of those things were great, it was me he wanted.

I scolded him for his rudeness; admonishing him that we just don’t say that to people. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized there is a place for getting away from everything and everyone.

He just wanted my full attention. He wanted me all to himself.

This is the way God feels about you.

Psalm 25:14 The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.

In the old language this word “secret” gives us a picture of a big comfy couch on which you can relax and enjoy the company of family and friends.

My mom knew exactly what Camden was desiring and made a quick exit. Camden beckoned me to cuddle on the couch in our living room. He wanted me to watch a video with him; just the two of us.

“Momma watch this with me!”

Sheer delight exuding from his voice, “Look at this! Are you watching?”

He kept turning to look at me; snuggling closer and closer.

God beckons us to come join Him. He doesn’t want anything from us; He just wants us.

With so many things competing for our attention it’s often difficult to just sit and enjoy time alone with our God. It’s worth it to set everything aside for Him. You may go into it frazzled, but you’ll come away with an overflowing heart.

It’s never wasted time.

He just wants to be near.

Choosing Joy

plant broken

This plant is stunning. The color is so vibrant. It’s really beautiful.

How come I can’t see what everyone else sees?

My eye is drawn to the one broken limb that’s hanging down.

I realize I can do this quite often in my life. I can focus on the one thing that isn’t going my way. I’m immediately drawn to the negative. Instead of being thankful for all the good, I focus on the one bad.

Sometimes many good and wonderful things are happening all around me. New things are springing up. Buds are coming to full bloom in this new season.

Do you feel this way?

Everyone is singing. You don’t feel much like singing though. Celebrations are all around. Somehow you don’t feel much like celebrating. Joy is abounding in everyone else, but you’re just not feeling it.

There is only one solution.

I have to cut that limb off.

Take every negative thought and remove it immediately.

Be thankful for all of the many blessings.

Don’t let that one thing steal your joy.

Whether it’s a big thing or small is irrelevant.

Joy is a choice, and thankfulness lifts the weight of every heavy heart.

God is not finished yet.

Psalm 27:14 “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”

Walk Away

mulch

I want to walk with Faithful. It’s one of things I hoped for when I got him. I want to do everything with him. I want to share life with him. Walking will be so good for him. Dogs absolutely love walking.

There’s only one problem. He won’t get out of the garden.

He wants to eat mulch.

I chide him, “No Faithful.” He doesn’t seem to hear me.

He continues to eat mulch. Next thing I know he has a big piece of bark that he’s chewing on. Mulch is toxic. It’s sharp and could cut his throat. I run over and get it out of his mouth before he gets hurt.

I call his name.

Nothing.

I call him again.

Nothing. Again and again I try. He still won’t come. I tug on his leash. Nothing. I tug a little harder.

I can’t do anything to make him come.

I just want him to walk with me.

He doesn’t understand.

I don’t want anything from him.

I just want to be with him.

He’d rather sit there and chew on mulch. He doesn’t know what he’s missing.

We do this in our lives.

God calls us to come walk with Him. We don’t come. We’d rather chew on mulch.

Maybe that mulch is something someone said to you. It hurt you and you won’t let it go.

Or it may be a relationship that you know is not good for you. Instead of coming when God calls you to walk away, you remain in a toxic situation.

It may just be fear of the unknown. It’s easier to stay where you’re at.

Walk away. Leave it.

You don’t know what you’re missing!

God has something so much better for you.

You have nothing to lose (except for pain, heartache, bitterness, anxiety, depression etc.) and everything to gain.
