No Thank You

beer can

Why am I so vehemently opposed to alcohol?

Recently my friend shared a very painful story with me that I cannot get out of my mind. She has an autistic son who is 10 years old. Every day her life is filled with havoc. She is challenged by screams, cries, and irrational unpredictable behavior daily. Her stress level is unimaginable. And yet she told me growing up with an alcoholic mother was ten times worse than what she deals with now.

When I walked past this beer can I wondered if the owner would leave behind such a legacy.

My grandfather did.

He was also an alcoholic. My mom has shared stories about her past that no child should suffer.

The thing about alcohol is that it never starts out looking so ugly. In fact just the opposite.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder! For Satan transforms himself into an angel of light.

Satan often makes bad things look good. He deceives us into thinking alcohol is no big deal. For some it’s not. For others it wrecks their lives. They don’t even realize it’s happening. Before they know it they depend on it, crave it and it overtakes their being. Maybe that isn’t what happened to you.

Do you want that for your children?

Of course not, but you simply don’t know that your child won’t be taken by it. Maybe you don’t drink in front of your children. They still see it in the house or in photos. That alone sends a subtle message. It says we approve of this. We like this. And for some it says, ‘we can’t have fun without it. If it’s ok for mom, it’s ok for me.’

What if they become an alcoholic because of this subtle message you’re sending?

What if your grandchildren live the legacy of my friend?

Is it worth it?

There is a photograph plastering the news today of the Attorney General of Maryland at an underage drinking party.

Lest anyone think I am judging, please let me say that could’ve been me in that photo. I was as lost as those kids are. If I can save one from a life of destruction, that’s my goal today.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker…

Will the Attorney General lose his job?

Was it worth it?

How many of those kids will lose their scholarship because of alcohol?

How many got arrested on the way home?

How many will end up pregnant?

Is it worth it?

1 Corinthians 8:13 So if what I eat [drink] causes another believer to stumble, I will never eat meat again as long as I live—for I don’t want to cause another believer to stumble.

As for me and my household, we choose to live alcohol free…and very happily I might add.

Pruning

hydrangea

A few months ago I felt the need to cut this hydrangea way back. The idea really began the year before. It began to take up too much space in my garden. Instead of complimenting it began to dominate. When it would rain the blooms would sag down to the ground. It was just out of control. I missed the winter pruning time. I was really hesitant to actually follow through with cutting it back.

Would it still be the same?

When spring came I knew what I had to do. I had to cut its branches way back. I didn’t know what to expect. Did I wait too long? Would it bloom at all? Well don’t you know this Limelight Hydrangea grew back three times as much as I cut off?

It is more magnificent than ever!

Are there some things that need to be cut out of your life? Maybe you’ve been putting it off. You know it needs to go, but you’ve been hesitant. You may be afraid it’ll hurt too much. Change is always difficult. But once that weight is lifted, you’ll be so free! It will be so worth it! You’ll be more vibrant and beautiful than ever!

John 15:1-2 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.”

Losing Our Independence

independence

My morning walk was a tough one. There was no breeze. The humidity was stifling, almost suffocating. There was a palpable darkness in my heart. It’s hovering over this nation as well.

Today is the Fourth of July. Bold red letters from the local food store circular shout out, “Celebrate Independence Day!”

I’m having a difficult time celebrating independence.

Like never before in this country we are losing our independence.

Dictionary.com defines independent as:

Not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc.; thinking or acting for oneself: an independent thinker.

In this country Christians are losing their freedom. Personally it scares me to death. Everyone in this country is allowed to their opinion, but if one Christian stands up and shares his, the backlash is nearly intolerable. It seems to be coming like a tidal wave.

If you are a Christian that means you follow, obey and adhere strictly to the teachings of Jesus Christ. You don’t get to pick and choose. It is all or nothing.

The Bible is the sole authority on everything we do.

That puts us in a great position.

My opinion doesn’t count.

My feelings don’t count.

It doesn’t matter what this author thinks. I need not look any further than the Author of life. He made this earth and everything in it. What He says goes.

The Bible is the sole authority on all matters big and small.

God hates all sin: lying, adultery, homosexuality, fornication, stealing, drunkenness etc.

When congress enacts a law that tries to force me to accept something that goes against the Bible, it hurts deep. It robs my freedom. It is an attempt to undermine the authority established by God Himself.

I shudder to think of the utter devastation this is wreaking on the children of this generation. There is a strict accountability to those that stumble God’s little children. Anyone who would teach something contrary to the Bible should take heed:

Mark 9:42 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

Today my heart is in mourning for these misguided children. I’ve just heard of another child who is so depressed she wants to take her life. There is a very real enemy wreaking havoc through this new agenda. He is destroying the moral fabric of our society. The powers that be want to extinguish the only Light that can bring hope to these hurting souls. When a country wants to do what’s right in its own eyes, it is the children who pay the price.

Proverbs 14:34 Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace….

God we turn our eyes to You. We beg you to save our nation. Hold our children close to your heart. Give us wisdom to raise our children in Your ways, not veering to the left or the right. Fill the emptiness in their hearts with love for You. Help us to share your love with those who are deceived. God please bless our nation. You and You alone make it great.
