Where does our value come from?

I felt my breath sucked out of me.

100 % of all babies in Iceland diagnosed with Down Syndrome are aborted. That is horrific.

LISTEN UP, 90 % of all babies in the United States diagnosed with Down Syndrome are aborted. That is equally horrific.

There is an enemy at work, Satan, who only comes to steal, kill and destroy. He does this by lying and deceiving. Just like he did to Eve in the garden of Eden, “Did God really say….?” Can you really take care of that baby? Can that baby really have a life?

Jesus came to give life. Abundant life. When we question what that life should look like, we break the second commandment. Don’t make for yourself a graven image. We make a god of our own imagination. We want to decide whose life has value.

Every life has immense value. Even and especially children with disabilities.

Someone I love very dearly has Down Syndrome.

I want to share some things you may not know.

These children are created in the image of God. God does not see as man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance. God looks at the heart. Their hearts just want to love and be loved.

They have a deep relationship with Jesus. It may not “look” like they do. They do.

When I need prayer, I know where to go. This child prays. He has the ear of Jesus.

This child has changed the world. He has made it a better place. His sisters and brothers are the most selfless siblings I’ve ever met. And his parents? Amazing reflections of the heart of our Heavenly Father. So loving. So graceful. So patient. His dad calls him his hero.

If you ask them if they would give Down Syndrome back if given the chance, they would tell you, “No way. Our lives are far better because of it.”

If you have never had the blessed opportunity to love a child with Down Syndrome, I pray you will seek one out. Your life will be filled with more love than you’ve ever known.

Let your wings down

There she was. Pretty little thing.
Before I knew it, she was gone.
Over here. Over there.
I tried catching up to her.
As soon as I got close, she was gone.
When she finally let down her wings, I caught up to her.

Ezekiel 1:24-25…and when they stood still, they let down their wings. A voice came from above…

We tend to be so much like this butterfly.

Constantly moving. On the go.

A trial comes. Or a decision needs to made.

What do I do?
Where do I go from here?
How should I respond?

No answer seems to come. We go on fluttering and flitting about.

Our same questions remain.

Let down your wings.

Psalm 46:10 Be still and know I am God…

God wants to speak to you. He really does. And He will.

Let down your wings. Rest in Him.

He will lead you.

Psalm 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

First Love

Look at this. It’s almost laughable. But, not really funny at all. In fact, it is very sad.

These totem poles are all over Alaska. They reminded me of the ridiculous idols the people of God used to worship.

Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…”

Recently, the Lord revealed to me that I had an idol in my own life. Realistically, just as foolish.

Essentially, an idol is anything we think about more than God. The Lord wants all our thoughts. He wants our full attention. All our devotion.
Revelation 2:4 …I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

This idol needed to go.

Right away.

My idol? An unsolved problem in my life. A difficulty that I could not fix. I couldn’t change the situation no matter how much I tried. And believe me, I tried. I tried everything. It became almost an obsession. It was all I could think about. All my time was wasted going over this thing in my mind. Over and over. When I woke up in the middle of the night, that’s what I thought about. Before I went to bed, yup, that’s what I was thinking about. In the morning, it was the first thing on my mind.

It consumed all my joy.

This needed to stop. Satan was having a field day with my thoughts. When I “prayed”, I wasn’t really praying. I was spinning my wheels. Not really getting anywhere. Just rehashing the yet unsolved situation.

1 Kings 18:21 Then Elijah stood in front of them and said, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!” But the people were completely silent.

Is the Lord your God Renee? Then follow Him. Trust Him.

Surrender this “thing” to Him.

This “thing” had become my idol.

He wasn’t just asking for partial surrender.

He wanted the whole thing.

I had to concede. No matter how much time I spent thinking about this, I couldn’t fix it. Make this happen. Speed up the process. Change this.

He can. Our God can do anything.

When I stepped aside, He could work.

All my efforts were only hindering Him.

Do you have an idol in your life?

Idols don’t necessarily have to be something bad. Your ministry can become an idol. Your prodigal child can become an idol. Unemployment. Autism. Your husband.

Bring it to the altar. Leave it there. All of it. Surrender.

It won’t be easy. Those thoughts will try to creep back in.

2 Corinthians 10:5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

Take those thoughts captive. Or you will end up the one captive. Enslaved.

John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

As soon as I surrendered this thing, I was free to do what the Lord really wanted me to do.

Freedom is bliss.

Leave your “thing” in the very capable hands of the Everlasting God, Creator, Sustainer, Graceful, Loving, Savior of the world.
